Homy helps connect residents and property managers

At InceptionU, we are very proud of our learners and what they can accomplish in just six short months. It’s an intense deep dive into the world of coding, software development, critical thinking, teamwork and problem-solving.

Over the course of the program, they deepen their knowledge of programming and spend the last three months building an actual software program which they present on Demo Day. In this series, we introduce you to our learners and invite you to see for yourself their creativity, design skills, teamwork and problem-solving skills. These projects represent months of hard work and, ultimately, helped many of our learners connect and find jobs with some of Calgary’s leading tech companies. Enjoy and share this post with a friend or colleague who you think might find it interesting.

Why: This team wanted to come up with a way to improve communication between residents of multi-unit buildings and the property manager. They also wanted to create an app that helped to build community and unite neighbors in these living situations. What to do if you lost your key? How do you book the elevator? What if you lost your pet? They knew there had to be a better way to unite residents and managers.

What they built:

They built Homy - a personal concierge service. The app allows residents to request different services from their building manager, connect with neighbours for social events and allows the manager to keep residents up to date on building maintenance and renovations. This product used the Mernstack.

Facilitator’s comments: Tony Enerson

“What really impressed me about Homy was …first of all, it was a great idea. It was a super relevant problem…but it has wide appeal, so they could build it out. Lots of people say they put the user first, but this team really lived that doctrine. So everything they built in Homy was focused on making the user’s life better.

I was also Impressed with the collaboration, in that we had to merge a second team in,  which is very much what happens in industry.  They took it in stride and onboarded each other very well.

I also liked how whole the product was;  everything you saw was live and functional.”

Marketing, branding and communications are my passion. They are also my job, which makes for a pretty interesting work week. I get energized by seeing the potential in a company, a project or marketing initiative and live for the moment when I can see my work executed and really making a difference. I have a creative heart and a strategic brain.
